Shuweihat Island

Day Trip

Cloudy

Abu Dhabi, UAE

Growing up in Dubai National Day weekend has always been a time to go out of the city that gets a bit crowded and into the outdoors. It also falls during the perfect time of year when the weather is just too good to be wasted indoors or at a mall. So we decided to go to Shuweihat Island. We have been putting off this trip for a while as it is a bit of a long journey. It is a good four hours away from Dubai. Driving there was nice with not many people on the road and with stops for food and chai, it was perfect. It was scenic if you like long stretches of desert. We decided to leave around 11 am so that we could reach there late afternoon and stay for sunset and then head back early afternoon.

Once you reach the area there is a barrier, but if you turn left and follow it you should be able to reach the island. It is a really beautiful sight, especially that day when there were fluffy clouds in the sky that reflected on the water giving the water a surreal appearance. We drove around the island a bit, but the best spot is the viewpoint that is stated on google maps. Being national day weekend there were a few people camped there, but I wouldn’t say it was crowded. Many people stuck to the shoreline of the water. As we went swimming around the rock formations there were even fewer people. The water isn’t deep either, you can walk if you aren’t a good swimmer. The area around and in the water is rocky, I would suggest taking your water shoes if you have any.

Other things that you should carry are water, some snacks or food. A mat to sit on or some chairs as the area is a bit rocky. There arent any shops or places to buy anything on the island. You should also note that camping here is technically not allowed but if you’re quite and not blasting music on full speakers and as long as you are being respectful of the island and not littering and leaving all your garbage behind, you normally don’t get kicked out of the island.

The colours of the rock formations were so pretty, the clear blue of the water in contrast to the pink and orange hues of the rock. It was a great getaway the area felt like it wasn’t the UAE any more with all the limestone rocks and formations around the crystal clear waters.
